Week 6: Jehovah Rohi (The Lord is My Shepherd)
Day 1:
This week we are learning about the Lord our Shepherd. What a sweet passage in the Bible, Psalm 23. Let’s start out by reading Psalm 23 in its entirety.
Jehovah Rohi right now is one of my favorite characters of God. I suppose, being a woman, I’m attracted to the personal side of this attribute. I like the thought of someone watching over me and protecting me. I like the idea of someone knowing my name and calling me by name.
“The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.” Psalm 23:1
1. What happens when we allow the Lord to be our Shepherd?
2. What are you wanting? Is there anything right now in your life that you are longing for?
3. Spend time in prayer right now sharing with Jesus your answer. He wants to be your everything. He wants for you to only “want” for Him.
Day 2
“…..He guides me in the paths of righteousness For His name’s sake….” Psalm 23:3
A shepherd is always on duty. He is ALWAYS working. He must feed his flock, water his flock, guard his flock, guide his flock, help them out of trouble, carry the weak lambs, and/or tend to the sick. He sets out to purchase his flock and commits himself to them. Throughout the bible, God is constantly referring to His chosen people as His flock. As our Shepherd, God is ALWAYS at work in our lives.
Read Psalm 23:1 again.
Sometimes it’s hard to imagine wanting NOTHING else but our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Sometimes it may be hard to place ALL of our trust in Him. However, I think that those times it may seem difficult are simply seasons in our lives where we have forgotten exactly WHO we are talking about. Let’s see if I can make myself a little clearer.
Read Isaiah 40 in its entirety.
4. What is the first thing our God says to us in this passage?
5. What does verse 8 tell us about our trust in God’s word?
6. Who is He like in verse 11? What does this particular verse mean to you?
As a Shepherd watches over his flock throughout the day and night.. so is OUR GOD watching over those who are his children; those who believe in His name.
7. What does Isaiah 40:28-31 say about God’s strength? About His ability to keep watch over us constantly?
8. How does this encourage you today?
9. What are you worried about? What are your fears? Isn’t our God able to handle them?
Read Ezekiel 34:11-15
Praise the LORD we have a God who searches for us! We have a God who seeks us out! He does not desire us to live “scattered” lives. He does not desire us to starve ourselves of the riches of his mercies, and grace, and peace. He wants to fill our bellies of his living water and lead us in the fertile pasture of HIS word, which “stands forever.” The Lord calls to those He loves. He desires rest for your soul. He desires to lead you “in the paths of righteousness.” Spend some time today in quiet prayer before the Lord. Be in awe of His greatness. Be humbled that He has taken it upon himself to seek you out and be your Shepherd.
Day 3
“….Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death…..” Psalm 23:4
Yesterday we examined our GREAT God, our Shepherd, in all of His might. As stated in Isaiah, He has taken us in his arms and carried us near his bosom. What joy to be found by Him! Now, what about those wolves?
Read Psalm 23:4
The Gospel is not some “fantasy” perfect life. There is still evil in this world. Because we have our Great Almighty Heavenly Father reigning as our Shepherd, it doesn’t mean we aren’t going to have our wolf attacks. It doesn’t mean that our pasture will always be bright and sunny. We WILL have valleys. We WILL suffer pain. We WILL experience sorrow. However, what is the key phrase in the second part of verse 4?
“…for You are with me.”
Through every tunnel, around every jagged turn, over each thorny brush, Christ our Lord is with us, bringing us comfort. How?
Read John 10:11-18
10. Who does Jesus refer to himself as?
11. What is the difference between a shepherd and a ‘hired hand’?
12. What does verse 18 mean to you?
Now read Hebrews 2:14-18, 4:14-16
Jesus marched right up to Calvary and tasted death, yet overcame “death’s sting.” He has walked through death and has risen to the other side. Therefore, through His blood, He is able to walk with us through EVERY avenue in our own lives “for whom are all things, and through whom are all things (Hebrews 2:10).” We should NOT fear evil for “through death He [has] render[ed] powerless him who had the power of death, that is the devil.”
Spend some time reflecting on Christ and what He did for us? Are you going through a difficult time right now? Do you feel alone? Pray that Christ will confirm to you the TRUTH of His presence through these passages of scripture as you face your hardships.
Day 4
“…..and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever…” Psalm 23:6
Wow! What a week! I don’t know about you, but I get SO fired up when I really look at all that Christ has done for me…when I look at the ultimate plan that God had ordained from before the beginning of the world. It’s just really blows my mind!
Read Psalm 23:5-6
What a hopeful passage. I have to take a moment to park on the last part of verse 5.
“..My cup overflows..”
We do not take the time to really dwell on the many blessings God has bestowed to us. His beautiful world… our relationships… our families….. our children… our friends….our health….or most importantly, our gift of salvation…. God’s gift of grace. If you have nothing else in this world.. not even your health… and you have been saved by God’s grace, your cup overflows. I so take my salvation for granted. My friends, God our Shepherd has sought you and called you out by his own goodness and kindness.
Read these scriptures and really spend some time thanking God for his gift of salvation to us through Jesus Christ.
Romans 3:23-24
Ephesians 1:3-6
Hebrews 12:1-3
John 3:16
1 John 4:10
1 Peter 1:3-9
I know these were a lot of passages and I really didn’t mean to make you have a bible drill today. I just feel like God’s word can convey His love and measures of expressing His love to us better than I ever could! Really think on these words. They really provide a lot of perspective for me. I become bold. I become excited for His “table” that he has prepared for me both in blessings here on earth and the long awaited Heaven. Praise the Lord! Amen? Finally, let’s look at John 10:27-29.
13. What three things does Jesus state in verse 27?
14. Are you listening? Are you following?
15. Due to all of the things in verse 27, what then is extended?
I LOVE the image of all of us in God’s hands never to be “snatched out!”
Are you questioning your faith? Are you wandering around behind the rest of the flock? Jesus cares for you. As the parable states…
What man among you, if he has a hundred sheep and has lost one of them does not leave the ninety-nine in the open pasture and go after the one which is lost until he finds it? When he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing. And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and his neighbors, saying to them “Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep which was lost!” I tell you that in the same way, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance. (Luke 15:4-7)
A Shepherd knows his sheep. We are the sheep. I can hear my little 4 year-old singing “I just want to be a sheep.. baa..baa.bbaa..baa…baa!” Why? Because we have a Great Shepherd who chooses us, rescues us, and restores us.
Now the God of peace, who brought up from the dead the great Shepherd of the sheep through the blood of the eternal covenant, even Jesus our Lord, equip you in every good thing to do His will, working in us that which is pleasing in His sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be the glory forever and ever. Amen. (Hebrews 13:20-21)
This is the Lord our Shepherd. This is Jehovah Rohi!
